Supporting the Federal Marriage Amendment
I have been passing around the petitions for the Arizona Protect Marriage Amendment and encouraging others to do the same.
Now I would also invite you to contact the U.S. Senate and ask them to vote for the federal marriage amendment. There are some very good reasons for supporting this amendment. Allow me to quote from an email letter I wrote to a particular Senate staffer explaining why supporting this amendment is extremely important.
"Seems that the vote [in the Senate] is scheduled for June 6, 2006 - D-Day anniversary.
"A lot of emails are picking up the point that the soldiers who gave their lives at Normandy did not die so that their nation would allow for the erosion of society's fundamental building block - the family. That marriage needs to be defined is surreal enough but that our Senate would have difficulties passing a measure that defines marriage goes beyond the pale.
"Of cause this is the same society that cannot protect unborn children. The Senator needs to realize ( and I am not being patronizing) that on certain core issues, he should dig deep into his understanding of life and what is it all about. He knows that there is an assault on marriage by those who hate the Judeo-Christian worldview - which loosely translated is the mores of Western Civilization. Look at the problems in Europe that have arisen from a rejection of those core values. America as a nation is based not on an ethnic identity, not on a religion, not even on a common culture. It is based upon the ideals of western civilization - that all persons are created equal, that all persons have certain fundamental rights, among these life, liberty and property, that the family is the cornerstone of society and culture, that government should be limited and not dictatorial, no matter how seemingly benevolent.
"Why is there a need for the marriage amendment? Because the courts have not respected the will of the people to define the common good. The elites in government and the popular culture have decided that they know what is best for you and me. We cannot be given the freedom to decide - or to elect our representatives to make decisions on the laws that will affect us. The courts do not respect the Congress or the state legislatures. They will only allow what they think is right. Thus passing the marriage amendment is a means of restoring the concept of republican form of government. It is a means of telling the courts that you cannot re-define reality to meet the political agenda of certain radical minority elements in our society. Voting in support of the marriage amendment respects the will of the people in those states that have passed state marriage amendments to their constitutions. It is a means of sending a powerful signal to the overreaching federal and state courts who believe that they are the new philosopher-kings of the 21st Century.
"Each Senator must recognize that this is not about whether or not the federal government should get involved with an area traditionally left to the states. The federal government has already interfered in the rights of the family, of husbands and wives, of children. The federal government has already become this dominant player in people's lives. Passing this amendment, as would passing a Human Life Amendment, only corrects the problem caused by the federal government through the courts."
Contact your senator. Please do it now. Tell him that this is very important, not just for today for for future generations.
